Urinary tract infections are caused by E. coli strains of nephritogenic, enteropathogenic serotypes and of those the serotype of which cannot be established. It is shown in this study, that the same enteropathogenic serotypes of E. coli which are most frequently encountered in faeces are found in urine. They are as follows: 0128, 0119, 0125 and 025. The strain of the same antigenic pattern was found in faeces and urine of only one patient, which suggests that E. coli strains responsible for urinary tract infections occur only temporarily in the alimentary tract. The distinction between E. coli strains isolated from urine or faeces could create a possibility of using different chemotherapeutic agents to eliminate strains responsible for urinary tract infections only. This in turn, could make it possible to avoid serious disturbances in biocenosis of alimentary tract.
