Tuberculosis of the pancreas: a rare cause of obstructive jaundice and portal hypertension

An unusual case of focal pancreatic tuberculosis is described in a young female who presented with epigastric pain, anorexia, weight loss and gastrointestinal tract bleeding. Clinical and radiological evidence of obstructive jaundice and portal hypertension, secondary to a pancreatic mass, was found. The diagnosis was only established through abdominal exploration. The rarity of this association has prompted its reporting and this report emphasizes the diverse clinical features of abdominal tuberculosis and the need for a high index of suspicion to save patients from undergoing unnecessary exploratory laparotomy.
