Tuberculosis of the bile duct is a rare cause of biliary stricture. The stricture is usually secondary to the tubercular lymphadenitis which lies in close proximity to the common bile duct. In rare cases there is no lymph node enlargement and the diagnosis is based on ductal histology. In such case, the tubercular bacilli reach this site,probably from the liver foci. The mechanism of stricture caused by tuberculosis is uncertain. It could be related to peri common bile duct inflammation due to tubercular lymphadenitis or due to ischemic insult leading to mucosal and deeper layer infarction.
