Varmus grilled over breach of embryo research ban

Harold Varmus, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was questioned on June 19 by the House oversight and investigations subcommittee about Mark Hughes, an NIH-funded researcher who in 1996 was accused of infringing a federal ban on embryo research. Hughes, a molecular geneticist, had looked for disease-causing mutations in DNA from embryos created by in vitro fertilization in order to decide whether they should be implanted in the mother's uterus. Panel members concluded that Hughes had violated the prohibition on embryo research from 1995 to 1996.
