We detected antinuclear antibodies (ANA) titers in 45 patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) from 1992 to 1996. The ANA titers in 22 inactive patients that were active before treatment were also detected. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the ANA positive rate in active cases and that in inactive patients (P gt 0.05). But the ANA titers in active cases were significantly higher than that in inactive patients (P lt 0.05). The results suggest that ANA negative may be seen in SLE even at active phase, but ANA titers were decreased when the activity was decreased in the ANA positive patients of SLE. ANA titers are a sign for the determination of the activity of SLE.
