Patients (93) with systemic lupus erythematosus (LES) were studied using Crithidia luciliae to determine the clinical significance of the complement binding anti-DNA antibodies. Cases of LES with anti-DNA-FC had a higher incidence of leukopenia, hypocomplementemia, elevated ESR, active involvement of the CNS, active nephropathy, disease activity and poor prognosis. The association of these antibodies and disease activity, CNS involvement and active nephropathy was statistically more significant than the association observed between these parameters and the anti-DNA antibodies. The sensitivity and specificity of these antibodies in LES, their relationship with the type of nephropathy and with CNS involvement and their prognostic value in LES are discussed.
