Ethanol, in the form of table wine or dilute aqueous solutions comparable to the ethanol content of wine, was given to over 100 elderly men. All 4 wines tested gave similar decreases in blood glucose. There was no difference in the decrease in blood glucose after ingestion of wine or diluted ethanol. The rise in blood ethanol was greater after diluted alcohol, but values were not as constant from subject to subject nor as predictable as after wine. The subjects appeared to be more tranquil and contented after the wine than after diluted alcohol.
