Calcipotriol poisoning in dogs

Attention is drawn to the toxicity for dogs of calcipotriol (Dovonex), a vitamin D analogue used in the treatment of psoriasis in man. In 1997, 3 of 4 dogs died despite aggressive treatment after accidental ingestion. Early aggressive treatment was by calciuresis with 0.9% saline, furosemide (5 mg/kg i.v. then infusion of 5 mg/kg per h) and corticosteroids. Secondary treatment and adverse effects are also described.
