Biological and medical aspects of the biochemistry of oxythiamine are reviewed with special consideration of evidence inconsistent with the traditional antivitamin concept. The mechanisms of metabolic effects of this derivative of vitamin B-1 not related to its putative anticoenzyme action are discussed.
