When 30 sows were mated to a Swedish Landrace boar, heterozygous for a chromosomal translocation resulting in reduced litter size, litters were 30% smaller than when the same sows were mated to a normal boar. Five different types of unbalanced karyotype were found in foetuses sired by the defective boar; none was found in post-natal investigations on 111 piglets sired by this boar, which indicates that defective karyotypes are lethal at the embryonic stage. 41% of the live piglets investigated had the same translocation as the sire.
