Clinical experiences in the use of para-immunity inducers in cattle during animal exhibitions

Cattle positive for bovine herpesvirus 1 after vaccination with killed vaccine may excrete the virus when stressed. At cattle shows referred to in this paper the proportion of such animals varied between 8 and 34%. Between 1988 and 1994 cattle taken to 7 regional, 1 national and 1 international show were treated with the paramunity inducers Duphamun and Baypamun. Of the 1717 cattle involved in these trials 8 were involved in outbreaks of rhinotracheitis (bovine herpesvirus 1) after their return. This is much lower than was the situation before 1988 and in cattle not treated with the paramunity inducers . It is recommended that the paramunity inducers be used for all cattle taken to such shows, but the need for strict quarantine and serological monitoring is also stressed.
