Twenty-five cows, negative for antibodies against contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) were vaccinated with a 1 ml dose of inactivated adjuvanted CBPP vaccine (SATL-83) (10 cows) or with a 0.5 ml dose of live T1 strain CBPP vaccine (10 cows) or remained as unvaccinated controls. Booster doses of 1 ml of the corresponding vaccine were given to 50 of the vaccinated cattle and 0.5 ml to 5 of the T1 vaccinated cattle 3 weeks after vaccination. Weekly blood samples from the cattle showed that in those receiving booster doses there was an increase in complement fixation antibody titres against CBPP. Three months after vaccination the cattle were challenged by intubating 10 of them with a virulent strain of Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides and mixing these cattle with the other vaccinated and control animals. All the vaccinated cattle survived the challenge although one animal vaccinated and boosted with SATL-83 had congested lungs and M. mycoides was isolated. The 5 control cattle and the incubated cattle all died of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia. It is concluded that when animals are vaccinated with potent CBPP vaccines and have acquired solid immunity, no booster is necessary.
