The effect of an Ayurvedic contraceptive preparation (VTP) given from 5-20th day of the cycle was studied in 7 regularly menstruating women volunteers. Each VTP tablet weighing 0.5 g contains an equal proportion of Vidanga (Embelia ribes), Tankana (borax) and Pippali (Piper longum). The cervical mucus, vaginal cytology, endometrial histology and menstrual bleeding pattern did not show any significant changes in 2 treatment cycles as compared to the control cycle. One woman conceived during treatment. VTP tablets given in the above dosage apparently are not likely to be effective for contraception.
