Estrogen and progesterone have definite effects on the activities of the [human, animal] CNS. The topics discussed in this review were: estrogen and progesterone accumulation in the CNS; the relation between concentrations of hormones in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid; action of hormones on brain enzyme activities and neurotransmitters; hormone effects on excitability and spontaneous activity of the brain; effects on epileptic seizure frequency; and effects on behavior.
