Size, adequacy, and artifacts of canine renal biopsy samples

The size adequacy, and artifacts of 125 biopsy samples obtained from normal dog kidneys with a Franklin-modified Vim-Silverman biopsy needle were evaluated. Provided the technique of biopsy was perfomed correctly, renal biopsy samples containing adequate quantities of renal parenchyma were obtained. Biopsy samples obtained in this study contained an average of 25 glomeruli. Artifacts were characterized by different degrees of compression of the renal parenchyma, and intraluminal tubular cell desquamation. Displacement of kidneys at the time of biopsy, to such an extent that the renal veins were partially or totally occluded, resulted in congestion of renal capillaries and escape of erythrocytes into Bowman's space and renal tubules of biopsy samples.
