Kenalog-40 (triamcinolone acetonide) in the treatment of severe infectious-allergic bronchial asthma

Kenalog-40 produced by Squibb was given to 26 patients with severe bronchial asthma of infectious-allergic aetiology aged 29 to 66 years. All patients had been treated previously with oral steroid agents for from 1 to 10 years. The duration of observation was 192 days on the average. The initial dose was 100 mg. In the following injections the dose was decreased gradually to 60 mg. The mean period between injections was 55.7 days. The mean daily dose was 1.75 mg ranging from 0.45 to 3.49 mg. in all patients a very good tolerance of the drug was observed, together with significant clinical improvement, increased vital capacity and FEV1 and improvement of the disturbed carbohydrate metabolism. Radiological examinations of the skeleton and stomach and gastroscopy showed that the effect of Kenalog-40 on osteoporosis and gastric mucosa is similar to that of other steroids but the clinical material observed was too small for assessment of the degree of this side effect.
