An attempt has been made to understand the utilization of services for safe motherhood, particularly, the antenatal care among the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe population of Orissa state, India. From this review, it was found that the antenatal care services are much poorer in case of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe population as compared to general population. The situation is much more discouraging among the scheduled tribe population. Various socioeconomic and cultural factors are influencing the acceptance of the antenatal care among these vulnerable communities. A community need-based investigation and action plan are essential to overcome these lacunae for making of a healthy picture of motherhood and childhood in Orissa.
