Attitudes of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe pupil towards education

In the last three decades researchers in India have evinced interest in tribal education. Poor enrolment and huge drop-out rates are but two of several educational problems. This paper reports a research project to study and compare the attitudes of tribal and scheduled caste pupils and to find out the causes of their adjustment problems. The sample consisted of all tribal and scheduled caste pupils in Bhandara and Chandrapur districts of Maharashtra. The results indicate that pupils of both communities have negative attitudes towards education. The cause is identified as 'the normative and action system of the society'.
