Distemper vaccine trials in two genotypes of mink in Denmark

There is considerable risk of epidemic distemper in mink in certain coastal districts of Denmark. Trials 'Candur S Aerosol-vaccine for mink' and 'Candur S for foxes and mink' were carried out on both pastel and dark mink in an uninfected farm. The results of aerosol vaccination during an outbreak are also described. No maternal antibodies were demonstrable in the 12-week-old young of vaccinated mothers. However, these kits responded to vaccination with neutralizing antibody titres exceeding 103 ND50/ml. Young pastel mink reacted with an equal or higher antibody titre than young dark mink. Therefore it seems possible to achieve considerable protection in an already infected farm by using an aerosol vaccine.
