Comparative distemper vaccine titrations in ferrets and minks

The hypothesis that pastel minks and perhaps also ferrets might be immunologically less developed than dark mink has been put forward because of the higher morbidity and mortality observed in pastel mink compared with dark mink in epidemics of distemper. This hypothesis could not be confirmed in the present study because when two different types of vaccines were tested by titrations in ferrets, pastel mink and dark mink the same titres were obtained in all three types of animals whether the antigenicity or protective capacity were measured. It was possible to obtain 100% lethality in the control groups of all three types of animal using the same challenge dose of virulent distemper virus.
