Food policy may influence fertility through its impact on the nutritional status of women and children, and through changes in other fertility-related factors. The nutrition-food policy link with fertility in rural areas is examined in this chapter within the context of three sets of relationships: (1) the impact of food policy on the nutritional state of women and children; (2) the impact of nutritional state on reproductive behaviour in rural areas; and (3) the impact of food policy operating through other mechanisms, such as the value of female time, household income, and intra-household income and budget control.
