Lipid peroxidation, polyunsaturated fatty acids and arterial hypertension

Data in the literature concerning the interrelationships among lipid peroxidation processes, hypertension and intake of omega -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are reviewed. The hypotensive effect of omega -3 PUFA is attributed largely to the indirect action of vasodilatory prostaglandins on arterial pressure rather than a direct effect on vascular tone. Inclusion of omega -3 PUFA in a diet supplemented with adequate amounts of antioxidants can decrease lipid peroxidation in cell membranes in tissues and organs and promote the stabilization of arterial pressure in patients in the initial stages of hypertension.
