The birth of a foetus is always at risk due to the teratogenic insult, right from the day of conception. The drugs, chemicals and infections may reach the developing "conceptus" through placenta and may influence the phenomenon of organogenesis, histogenesis and maturation process. Medical staffs, working, in this field, should remain fully aware of the risk of prescribing drugs/chemicals to prevent an unnecessary tragedy due to malformations (intrauterine death, malformations, retarted growth and functional deficit). Each prescription related to pregnant mothers needs to be checked individually as a safeguard (preventive aspects). Drug manufacturers should follow the internationally accepted criteria during the evaluation of drug/chemical for its teratogenicity.
