After a brief summary of the various mechanisms involved in the transmission of pain, the authors set out the pharmacological bases for its treatment, and look at the different properties of the three main groups of analgesics - peripheral analgesics, tricyclic antidepressants and central analgesics. In the second part, they describe the most important types of therapy and the practical treatment of postoperative pain and chronic pains in otorhinolaryngology.
