Seven parameters [serum albumin concentration, plasma volume, intravascular albumin (IVA), degradation rate, extravascular albumin (EVA) to IVA distribution rato, EVA and rate of exchange between IVA and EVA] derived from the albumin turnover studies in 11 controls and 28 patients of tropical sprue were analyzed with multivariate statistical methods. The discriminant analysis showed that only 3 cases of tropical sprue were misclassified while all the controls were recognized correctly. The parameters were also evaluated for their contribution to the recognition process. Serum albumin concentration, EVA/IVA distribution ratio and plasma volume carried much of the information required for diagnostic evaluation on the basis of discriminant analysis. Misclassification rate for these parameters was 0.145. When all the 7 parameters were considered, the value dropped to 0.136.
