Influence of dietary intake of fat on faecal fat excretion in tropical sprue

The effect of different amounts of unsaturated and saturated fat, 75, 124 and 175 g, in the diet on excretion of fat in faeces was studied in 34 patients with tropical sprue. There was a progressive increase in fat excretion when fat intake was raised from 75 to 175 g on both types of fat diet. Excretion of N on both fat diets followed a similar pattern. Fat balance studies with intakes of 125 g fat are suggested in areas where tropical sprue is common, to help in detecting milder forms of the disease.
