Visceral larva migrans masquerading as liver secondaries

The case is reported of a 45-year-old woman with symptoms of recurrent abdominal pain which on ultrasonography was diagnosed as chronic cholecystitis. At laparotomy the diagnosis was confirmed but the liver was also found to be studded with multiple white nodules suggestive of metastatic carcinoma. However, histopathology of a nodule was compatible with visceral larva migrans. It is suggested that in cases such as this, biopsy should always be undertaken, as without this the patient is likely to be regarded as having a terminal malignancy. It is stated that this is the first report of visceral larva migrans from India.
