This paper is an introduction for a series of papers on the development and use of DDT published by the research staff of the Orlando, Fla., laboratory. A brief outline and the scope of the various propects conducted under the auspices of the Office of Scientific Research and Development are discussed. The history of the original investigations on DDT conducted at the Orlando laboratory is given, together with general statements on the effectiveness of DDT for the control of mosquitoes, flies, lice, bedbugs, fleas, and cockroaches.
