Cryptococcal meningitis in a young Ethiopian woman with AIDS

A case of Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis is reported in a 20-yr-old HIV-positive woman who presented with headache, fever and generalized pruritic skin lesions. Cerebrospinal fluid culture showed yeast cells and an India ink preparation was positive for C. neoformans. Blood grew yeast cells and yeasts were seen in a KOH preparation from a skin lesion. Despite treatment with amphotericin B (0.6 mg/kg daily), the patient died. The clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of cryptococcal meningitis are briefly discussed.
