Each of 8 ewes, 125 to 135 days pregnant, had indwelling catheters inserted into a femoral artery, in the umbilical vein of a fetus and in a pedal artery so as to approximate to the level of the fetal femoral artery. After the operation 4 of the ewes were fed to appetite and 3 were deprived of food for 2 to 3 days to reduce blood sugar below 2 mM. The eighth ewe was starved for the first 3 days after operation and fed on the next day.
