The major goal of our studies was to answer the question whether or not the utilization of fructose, sorbitol and xylitol is insulin-independent, as is often claimed. The use of glucose substitute sugars is more expensive and, what is more significant, potentially dangerous since lactic acidosis, although rare, is an unpredictable complication. These substances remain interesting experimental tools but have no place in parenteral nutrition.
