Studies with mice showed that protection against reovirus-induced meningoencephalitis could be passively transferred, either transplacentally or by sucking, and it was serotype cross-reactive (dams immunized with reovirus type I/L protected neonates infected with T3c9). T-cells as well as B-cells derived from the intestine appeared to be capable of mediating virus-specific immune responses as a result of enteric priming.
