'Blue ear' disease of pigs

Twenty-one paired serum samples were collected from sows on 3 farms in Humberside suspected of having been infected with the disease and from one distant farm with late abortions; the first at the onset of the illness and the second 10 to 14 days later. No significant pattern of seroconversion was detected against a range of agents. 14 of the paired serum samples (2-5 pairs from each farm) were tested against the Lelystad agent, all of the first of the paired samples were seronegative, 7 of 10 of the second samples from 3 Humberside farms were seropositive. All of the second samples from the fourth farm were seronegative. It is suggested that the outbreaks of disease on the 3 Humberside farms have the same aetiology as similar outbreaks in the Netherlands.
