The technique of protoplast fusion which optimized prototrophic recombination in aclacinomycin-producing Streptomyces galilaeus was studied and applied to the contruction of new anthracycline analog-producing recombinant upon genetic cross of two specific mutants blocked in aclacinomycin biosynthesis. Thus, 2-hydroxyaclacinomycin-producing recombinant was obtained by the protoplast fusion.
