Using the Ames plate method, ellagic acid was found to inhibit the genotoxic effects of aflatoxins B1 and G1 in Salmonella typhimurium. In studies using rats, the amount of DNA eluted from hepatocytes after an intraperitoneal injection of aflatoxins alone and after pretreatment with 100 mg/kg ellagic acid was determined. The percentage of DNA eluted after treatment with 1.0 mg/kg aflatoxin B1 was reduced from 26.9 to 24.9% in the presence of ellagic acid, and after treatment with 25 mg/kg aflatoxin B1, from 37.5 to 26.9%. It is suggested that ellagic acid may inhibit covalent binding of carcinogenic molecules to DNA.
