Echinostomatid flukes in pigeons

Two racing pigeons aged about 4 months were received at the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory, Northampton, UK, in a moribund condition. The breeder had lost 8 of 10 young birds in 2 weeks. They became thin and declined to fly. At necropsy the only lesion was a bloody enteritis affecting the last 10 cm of the intestine. Wet smears of the gut contents showed many live helminth parasites resembling Echinostoma revolutum.
