A single, large crusty cauliflower-like mass approximately 10 cm in diameter was removed from a one-year-old calf from the skin of the mandible just behind the symphysis. Only one animal on the farm was affected. Microscopically, the mass conformed to the description of a cutaneous papilloma. Electron microscopic examination of tissue stained with phosphotungstic acid revealed numerous papillomavirus and parapoxvirus particles. Although no confirmatory tests were carried out the papilloma, which lacked a fibrous component, it was tentatively considered to be caused by bovine papillomavirus 3. No poxvirus inclusion bodies were seen.
