An examination of 5 days postnatal mouse spinal cord revealed a number of mitotic cells with cytoplasmic features identical with those of oligodendrocytes which at 5 days begin to myelinate axons in most of the tracts. One mitotic cell with a process attached to a myelin sheath was observed. Myelinating oligodendrocytes apparently retain the ability to divide.
