Electron microscopic evidence of a secretory function of the ependyma in the rat brain

Bolbous apical projections of the cytoplasm of ependymocytes lining the recessus inframammilaris of the 3rd brain ventricle in young adult male rats are described. The projections disintegrate, releasing their content into the ventricle lumen. This process is an apparent case of apocrine ependymosecretion.
