An investigation of 26 male and 4 female patients admitted to the Kariba hospital, Rhodesia, with Acanthocheilonema perstans infection showed that persons whose work took them into the bush were those most likely to be affected. 4 of the patients complained of fever and cough and the authors suggest that A. perstans may give rise to a pulmonary tropical eosinophilia syndrome. Periodicity studies showed that microfilariae could be found in the blood at any time of the day or night. Treatment by diethylcarbamazine or niridazole was not satisfactory; in one patient, but not in another, hycanthone gave promising results.
