The chronic environmental, cultural and economic factors that make countries prone to agricultural crises and recurring famine are analysed. Sections look at: Third World health statistics and the effect of malnutrition on the physiological capacity to work; chronic undernutrition and short term aid strategies; appropriate long term aid, both national and international; food aid, its targeting and effect on local initiatives; the situation in India; and, concentrating on Africa, food production versus population growth; AIDS; food production; research; and finance. It is concluded that economic development and helping people to create a more stable, prosperous basis for life and living must be the target if the advance of famine in Africa in particular is to be halted.
