For 6 weeks groups of 35 weanling male Wistar rats were given a purified diet with 10% linseed oil or sunflower oil. Serum was collected from both groups and was added to culture medium used to grow cardiomyocytes obtained from rats 2 to 4 days old. In those conditions, the incorporation of omega 6 and omega 3 polyenoic fatty acids showed similar trends in hearts and cultured cardiomyocytes. Content of C:22-unsaturated fatty acids was lower in myocytes than in hearts but ratio of acids of the omega 6 series to those of the omega 3 series was similar.
