Partial characterization of pectinolytic enzymes of Bacteroides ruminicola isolated from the rumen of a sheep

Pectinolytic enzymes produced by Bacteroides ruminicola were studied. Properties of enzyme differed from those of commercial pectinase. The enzyme was optimum at pH from 8-0 to 8-5, was activated by Ca ion and produced unsaturated products with maximum absorption at wavelength 235 nm. Polygalacturonic acid was more readily attacked than pectin. Evidence is presented that the principal pectic enzyme of B. ruminicola is a poly- alpha -1, 4-D-galacturonide lyase (EC 4.2.99.3).
