Ethanol Production and Utilization by Aphelenchus avenae and Caenorhabditis sp

The major anaerobic fermentation end-product of Aphelenchus avenae and Caenorhabditis sp. after 12 hours incubation was ethanol and its production was directly correlated with glycogen catabolism. Under aerobic conditions both nematodes utilized ethanol-1-C14 and labelling was detected in CO2 and also in glycogen of A. avenae. After 15 days, the total dry weight loss by A. avenae was 25% greater in the absence of alcohol than in the presence of ethanol or n-propanol.
