Report on the incidence of Clostridium botulinum in dressed poultry

In November-December, 1970, cavity swabs were taken from 1249 chicken carcasses at 16 packing stations in different parts of Great Britain. Culture and mouse pathogenicity and protection tests revealed Cl. botulinum type C in the four birds (0.32%). Recent outbreaks of type C botulism in broilers suggest this disease might be more common than is generally supposed, but little appears to be known about the source of the organisms and the epidemiology of the disease. The hazard to man is considered to be slight.
