The rate of Na+/Li+ countertransport and Na+/H+ exchange in erythrocyte membranes was measured in patients with either acid-induced peptic ulcer (30) or essential hypertension (30), as well as in healthy individuals with normal arterial pressure (30). Blood from all patients was analyzed in order to determine the rates of Na+/Li+ countertransport and Na+/H+ exchange. As a result of the study, an increase in Na+/Li+ countertransport and Na+/H+ exchange in erythrocyte membranes was observed. Such an increase was noted earlier in essential hypertension and supported in the present study. The high rate of Na+/Na+ (Na+/Li+) exhange and Na+/H+ exchange is essential hypertension and acid-peptic ulcer suggests a common pathogenesis of these diseases at the subcellular and molecular levels.
