Effect of colostral antibodies on the pathogenesis of intestinal chlamydial infections in calves

Although no clinical signs were observed during the experiment, chlamydiae were recovered from the faeces of five of the eight pregnant cows studied; their colostrum and, in some cases, their serum contained chlamydial antibodies. Calves born to these cows were inoculated by mouth with the chlamydial agent of bovine polyarthritis. Fever, severe watery diarrhoea and, in those which survived long enough, polyarthritis developed in calves deprived of colostrum, while those given colostrum showed less severe enteric signs, but the agent continued to multiply in the intestine, and polyarthritis eventually developed.
