Cereal grains are usually used as the main material for preparing rodenticide baits. Preferences for different grains vary according to species and habitats of rats, and locations. Rice, maize, barley, wheat, sorghum, groundnuts and sweet potatoes were tested to study the preferences of rats in the laboratory. Bandicota nemorivaga, Rattus losea and R. norvegicus preferred hulled rice, Apodemus agrarius and Mus musculus preferred groundnuts and R. rattus preferred maize. The influence of quality and nutrient contents of baits on the intake of the rats is also discussed.
