Fifty-five male lambs, 3 to 4 months of age, which were naturally infected with M. expansa were allocated randomly to 5 groups of 11 animals. The groups were treated with either praziquantel at 3.75 mg/kg, albendazole at 3.8 mg/kg, febantel at 5 mg/kg or oxfendazole at 5 mg/kg. The fifth group were controls dosed with tap water. All lambs in the control group were infected with M. expansa when the animals were killed 3 days after treatment. Examination of faeces collected daily in McMaster faecal collecting bags showed that more than 90% of all proglottids found were removed from the treated lambs during the first day after treatment. All lambs treated with albendazole or febantel were cleared of cestode infection whereas lambs treated with praziquantel and oxfendazole had a few scolices present at PM examination. Calculation of extense efficacy showed it was 90.9% for praziquantel or oxfendazole and 100% for albendazole or febantel. The arithmetic (geometric) intense efficacy was 95.9 (89.5)% for praziquantel, 100 (100)% for albendazole or febantel and 98.6 (90.4)% for oxfendazole. The extensity and intensity of the cestode infection were significantly reduced by all the tested compounds compared with the control group and there was no significant difference in the efficacy among the 4 drugs.
