Immunoprophylaxis against filarial parasite, Dipetalonema viteae in multimammate rat Mastomys natalensis: immunisation with adult worm antigens

Mastomys immunized with antigen fractions obtained by differential centrifugation of adult Dipetalonema viteae homogenate were challenged with homologous infective larvae (L3). The degree of protection was determined by course of infection and recovery of adult worms. Whole worm homogenate was ineffective whereas fraction II (4000 g) and fraction. IV (21,000 g supernate) imparted, respectively, 58.9 and 13.6% protection over controls. Fraction III (21,000 g sediment) on the contrary showed suppression effect resulting in 31.6% higher establishment of worms than control. The protective antigen associated with fraction II can be separated by extraction with Triton X-100 and induced better protection (78.7%).
